BMW has released information on a pair of new special-edition 3 Series models available in Europe. The 2012 3 Series Exclusive Edition will offer buyers new 18-inch, lightweight V-Spoke wheels as well as a unique Mineral Grey exterior paint. Inside, the cabin is wrapped in Dakota leather in either Pearl Grey with contrast stitching or black. Bamboo grain anthracite wood trim adds a bit of specialness as well.

Of greater interest to enthusiasts is news that BMW will also offer customers a new 2012 3 Series M Sport Edition with a slightly sharper performance edge. BMW turned its M engineers lose on the vehicle’s suspension and a host of exterior and interior tweaks help set both the coupe and convertible models apart from the rest of their pack.

The M Sport Edition features a set of 18-inch lightweight alloy wheels of its very own, and shadow line window finishers join a body-color rear diffuser. Indoors, an M Sport steering wheel and stainless pedals are standard equipment, as are Dakota leather seats with blue contrast stitching. Let’s hope these two specials make it to North America.

BMW has initiated a recall of certain diesel X5 models due to a faulty belt tensioner. The German automaker says that a manufacturing error at the supplier could mean that the tensioners have incipient cracks in their welds.

Over time, the tensioners could fail. If that happens, the vehicle could lose power steering, which could potentially cause an accident. The recall covers a total of 923 2012 XDrive35D models, and BMW dealers will replace the part free of charge. The campaign is expected to get underway this month, and owners are urged to contact BMW customer relations with any questions.

We’re used to seeing chassis numbers on collector cars go on for several digits. But not this one. This one is chassis number 3. That’s it. And that’s because this is the oldest production Bentley in existence.

Following EXP 1 and EXP 2 – the former of which is no longer with us, the latter kept in Bentley’s corporate collection – this 1921 Bentley 3-Litre was the first production model to leave the factory. And it’s in immaculate condition, despite having been raced through much of its life. In fact, while Bentley’s own EXP 2 has had many parts replaced by now, Chassis No. 3 here is all original, down to the aluminum coachwork, brass brightwork, engine and gearbox.

This extremely rare example of automotive history is going up on the auction block at Pebble Beach in August under the auspices of Gooding & Company, along with an exceptional motorcycle we’ll be bringing you shortly.
